The Wheels Best Cars program assesses contenders across areas including driving, interior, practicality and overall value.

It wasn't one standout feature that won the MG4 EV Urban the award. It was the combination of price, equipment, space and the way it drives.

The range starts from $31,990 drive away for the Essence 43, with a strong list of standard equipment for the price.

Wheels found it refined, comfortable and easy to drive in traffic. These are all things that matter if most of your driving is around Brisbane and the Redlands.

For someone looking at their first EV, a second family car or an everyday commuter, the Urban's appeal is pretty straightforward. It's affordable by current EV standards, well equipped and doesn't sacrifice too much space to achieve it.

How much is the MG4 EV Urban in Brisbane?

The MG4 EV Urban starts from $31,990 drive away for the Essence 43, while the longer-range Essence 54 is $34,990 drive away at MG's recommended pricing.

The good news is you don't lose equipment by choosing the cheaper Essence 43. Both versions get:

How does the MG4 EV Urban compare with the MG4 and GAC Aion UT?

This is where things get interesting because similar pricing doesn't necessarily mean you're getting a similar car.

The Urban has the biggest boot of the group and the lowest MG drive-away starting price.

Move up to the MG4 Essence 64 and you get rear-wheel drive, 452km of claimed WLTP range and much faster peak DC charging.

The GAC Aion UT Premium takes another approach again, with 150kW of power, 430km of claimed WLTP range and an eight-year unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Specs tell you plenty, but this is one comparison that's worth doing in person. In particular, the MG4 and MG4 EV Urban have different layouts and driving characteristics despite sharing the MG4 name.

How far will the MG4 EV Urban go on a charge around Brisbane?

Officially, the MG4 EV Urban offers:

Real-world range won't always match those numbers.

Air-conditioning on a humid Brisbane afternoon, sustained motorway driving and extra passengers can all reduce range. That's true of every EV, not just the MG4 EV Urban.
